Minimally Invasive Surgery Q & A

What is minimally invasive surgery?

Minimally invasive surgery is an advanced surgical technique that uses special tools when performing procedures to reduce incision sizes and damage to healthy tissue.

Dr. Barrere is an experienced OB/GYN with advanced training in minimally invasive procedures. Whenever possible, he uses these techniques for his patients that need surgery, so they get the care they need with less downtime and pain.

What are the benefits of minimally invasive gynecologic surgery?

Compared to traditional open surgery, minimally invasive gynecologic surgery offers many benefits. These benefits include:

  • Smaller scars
  • Shorter hospital stay
  • Less post-surgical pain
  • Lower risk of infection and complications
  • Faster recovery

Surgery is usually the last recommended treatment for any gynecological condition. When Dr. Barrere recommends surgery, he wants to ensure you get the best possible outcomes.

What are the types of minimally invasive surgery?

There are many types of minimally invasive gynecologic surgery. Dr. Barrere performs:

Laparoscopic procedures

During laparoscopic minimally invasive surgery, Dr. Barrere makes a small incision in your abdomen and inserts a laparoscope. A laparoscope is a thin camera which sends pictures of your internal organs to a monitor.

Dr. Barrere may use the visualization provided by the laparoscope to diagnose a gynecological problem, such as endometriosis. Once found, he makes additional small incisions to insert the surgical tools he needs to perform the procedure and treat the problem.

Dr. Barrere also uses this minimally invasive technique to perform a laparoscopic hysterectomy. A hysterectomy is the surgical removal of your uterus.

Vaginal procedures

Dr. Barrere also performs vaginal hysterectomies, the least invasive surgical approach for a hysterectomy.

During a vaginal hysterectomy, he makes small incisions through the wall of your vagina to remove your uterus.

Dr. Barrere may also use minimally invasive surgical techniques to perform tubal ligation, a surgical sterilization that cuts or blocks your fallopian tubes to prevent fertilization of your eggs.

Am I a candidate for minimally invasive surgery?

Schedule a consultation with Dr. Barrere to see if you’re a candidate for minimally invasive surgery. He conducts an in-depth clinical exam to assess your health and determine the right treatment for you.

Though minimally invasive surgery offers many benefits, Dr. Barrere’s goal of any surgical procedure is to ensure you get the best possible outcomes. In most cases, minimally invasive surgery makes the right choice, while in others, a traditional open surgical approach is better.
